Yesterday we looked at Genesis 11 and the Tower of Babel and how Babel was undone in Acts 2 at Pentecost.  At Babel, men were interested in their own glory and making a name for themselves.  Usually when people want to make a name for themselves, sin is not far behind.  God stopped the effort and confused the languages.  In Acts 2 God undoes all this and now is ready to build something with men.  Now with the unity and guidance provided by the Spirit, men can build something to make a name for God in His creation.

Sunday we took another look at Genesis 1:1 and also looked at John 1:1. John’s gospel opens intentionally. He is calling us back to the beginning and letting us know that the one who was there in the beginning has now come here to be with us. Something new and exciting is taking place in the ministry of Jesus and we need to pay attention to him.  You can listen to the rest below if you would like.

We started our series on Genesis yesterday.  Our text was simply Genesis 1:1.  In fact, the material I have is too long for one sermon, so the rest will follow this coming Sunday.  You can listen to yesterday’s sermon below, but the main point is this:  God is the one who provides purpose and meaning for our lives.  When we forget about Him and look for meaning in all the other things this world has to offer, we wind up in a mess.  You can hear the rest below.

Sunday was a reflection of 7 years preaching for the church here in Lake Travis.  I found years ago that the primary lens through which I see Scripture is through relationships.  Relationship with God and with each other.  This to me is the struggle of Scripture and of life.  I won’t elaborate much more here, but you can listen below if you wish.

We wrapped up our series on the Beatitudes yesterday.  We looked at a list of Beatitudes that one might find if you were to poll people.  In other words, the world’s version of the Beatitudes.  The problem is that they are usually half truths.  They sound good and make some sense, but ultimately do not provide happiness.  You can listen below if you want to hear the rest.

Taking a stand for something and being willing to accept persecution is not unusual.  The bigger question might be is what you are standing for really worth it.  As Jesus begins his Sermon on the Mount he closes this first section by reminding his listeners and us today that he is worth it.  The reward will be great.  So as you hear his introduction to what his kingdom is going to be about, will you live it out?  To hear more, you can listen to the rest of the sermon below.

I used a lot of scriptures yesterday to help show the why Jesus should be our focus.  We went through the scriptures quickly so for those who were not able to write them all down, here they are:

Matthew 28:5-6,

Matthew 28:18,

Philippians 4:19,

Colossians 1:16,

John 1:18,

John 14:9,

John 11:25-26,

1 Corinthians 1:30,

Ephesians 1:22-23,

1 Corinthians 2:1-2,

Colossians 1:25-29,

John 14:6,

Philippians 1:21,

Ephesians 4:12-13,

2 Corinthians 5;17,

Galatians 2:20,

Matthew 28:20

The best image I could come up with for understanding a peacemaker is a jigsaw puzzle.  We have all the pieces and they need to be put together.  A peacemaker is one who works to put the pieces together so that the beautiful image that God has can be revealed.  Those who can do this, are the children of God.  Just like in the parable of the prodigal son.  What is important to the father?  that his household be together.  His final act in the story is to work on reconciling the two sons.  Let’s be peacemakers.  The longer version is below if you want to listen to yesterdays sermon.

There is no sermon recording for yesterday, but we were able to resume with our series on the Beatitudes.  “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.” This one troubles me a lot.  I don’t feel pure in heart, but I long to see God.  What do I do?  Maybe the focus in on learning to see.  If I can look and learn to see what God sees, then maybe I can become a bit more pure in heart.  As I become more pure in heart, then I can see God a little more.  As I gain a clearer vision of God, then I make my heart a bit purer.  Jesus tells us that if we have seen him we have seen the Father.  Maybe we start there.  Can we just cast our vision upon Jesus and follow him and maybe the purity of heart will follow.  At least we get to see God as he incarnated himself as a man.  Maybe all I have to do is just follow.  At a minimum, I just have to do what Jesus says at the end of the sermon.  Be a wise man and put his words into action.

Here is a great video clip honoring Chevy’s 100th birthday.  See if you like it.

Hello Everyone,

We are back from our trip.  I was gone December 25 so there is no sermon recording for that Sunday.  I will post below the bulletin for December 25 and January 1 as well as the sermon from January 1.

Next week I will resume our series on the Beatitudes, but yesterday I wanted to do a New Years sermon.  I use an Iphone and I keep the location services turned off.  I don’t like the idea that Apple or Google or anyone else is keeping tabs on me and where I go.  I don’t even like using the savings cards that stores offer for discounts, though I do.  I like saving the money more at this point than the marketing they are doing on me by tracking my purchases.  There are more and more stories about how we are being watched and what we do recorded that just make me nervous.  It’s not that I am doing anything that I am really worried about, but it is interesting how as I become more aware of the cameras watching me and what I do being recorded, I find that it does affect my behavior.  I live my life better when I can conduct my life so that I have nothing to be ashamed of.  I need to remember that though I can turn of the Location Services on my phone (I am trusting that it really turns off) I cannot turn Location Services off on God.  We need to live our lives so that whatever we do is to God’s glory and we do not have to be ashamed about our lives.  Let’s live this year so that we can bring glory to God with our lives.
